Understanding Hair Loss Treatment
Hair loss is common, but there are different reasons why it happens. Male pattern hair loss is the most common type in men and usually develops gradually, causing a receding hairline, thinning around the crown, or both.
Male pattern hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia, is mainly influenced by genetics and a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In people who are genetically sensitive to DHT, affected hair follicles gradually become smaller. Over time, the hairs they produce can become finer and shorter, leading to visible thinning or a receding hairline. It usually develops gradually rather than causing sudden patches of hair loss.
Yes. Not all hair loss is male pattern hair loss. Stress, illness, nutritional deficiencies, thyroid problems, certain medicines and some scalp or autoimmune conditions can also cause hair loss. If your hair loss is sudden, patchy or unusually rapid, or you have scalp pain, redness, scarring or other unexplained symptoms, you may need assessment by your GP or a dermatologist rather than treatment through an online hair loss service.
PillSuite offers finasteride and topical minoxidil for male pattern hair loss. Finasteride is a prescription tablet that reduces the conversion of testosterone to DHT, helping to slow the process that causes susceptible hair follicles to shrink. Minoxidil is applied directly to the scalp and can help maintain hair growth and encourage growth in thinning areas. They work differently and may sometimes be used together. Which option is appropriate depends on your pattern of hair loss, health, current medicines and individual circumstances.
You don’t have to treat male pattern hair loss, but if it bothers you, treatment can help slow further hair loss and may improve hair growth for some people. Treatment generally takes time, and results vary from person to person. Finasteride and minoxidil also usually need to be continued to maintain their benefits. Before treatment is supplied, we’ll assess your hair loss and health information to check that the option you’ve chosen is appropriate for you.

Questions, answered.
How do I know if my hair loss can be treated?
Gradual thinning around the hairline or crown may respond to treatments such as finasteride or minoxidil. If your hair loss is sudden, patchy or unusually rapid, there may be another cause that needs investigating first.
Can treatment regrow my hair?
It can help. Finasteride and minoxidil can slow further hair loss and may improve hair growth, but results vary and complete regrowth can’t be guaranteed.
How long does treatment take to work?
Hair growth takes time, so you may need to use treatment consistently for several months before judging the results. Taking photos every few months in similar lighting can make changes easier to notice.
Which is better, finasteride or minoxidil?
They work differently. Finasteride reduces DHT, while minoxidil acts directly on the scalp to support hair growth. Some people may use both together where appropriate.
Can finasteride cause sexual side effects?
Yes, it can in some people. Reported effects include reduced sex drive and difficulty getting or maintaining an erection. If you experience side effects that concern you, contact us for advice.
Can minoxidil make my hair shed at first?
Yes. Some people notice temporary increased shedding after starting minoxidil. This can happen as hairs move through the growth cycle. If it’s severe, persists or concerns you, contact us.
What happens if I stop treatment?
The benefits usually only last while you continue treatment. If you stop, hair loss is likely to gradually resume, and hair maintained or gained through treatment may be lost over time.
When should I speak to my GP or a hair loss specialist?
Speak to your GP if your hair loss is sudden, patchy or unusually rapid, or if you have scalp pain, redness, scaling or scarring. You should also seek advice if your hair loss comes with other unexplained symptoms, or if you’re unsure what’s causing it. A GP may recommend further assessment or tests to look for an underlying cause.
Can I get hair loss treatment through PillSuite?
Yes, if treatment is suitable for you. Complete a private online assessment and we’ll review your hair loss, health and current medicines before prescription treatment is supplied. If your hair loss may need further investigation, we’ll advise you on the appropriate next step.
