Understanding Erectile Dysfunction Treatment
Erectile dysfunction (ED) means regularly having difficulty getting or keeping an erection firm enough for sex. It’s common and can happen for many different reasons. For some men it’s temporary, while for others it can keep happening. Understanding what may be behind it can help you find the right way forward.
There isn’t always one single cause of ED. Sometimes it’s linked to your physical health, sometimes to how you’re feeling, and often it’s a combination of the two. Physical causes can include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and problems affecting blood flow. Certain medicines, smoking, drinking too much alcohol and other lifestyle factors can also play a part. Stress, anxiety, depression and worries about sexual performance can affect erections too. Even after the original problem has passed, worrying that it will happen again can sometimes make things more difficult.
ED can often be treated, but the right approach depends on what’s causing it and your individual health. Prescription medicines such as sildenafil and tadalafil work by increasing blood flow to the penis when you’re sexually aroused, helping you get and maintain an erection. They don’t cause an erection automatically, so sexual stimulation is still needed. Looking at possible underlying causes matters too. Changes such as stopping smoking, reducing alcohol, being more active or improving your general health may help, depending on what’s contributing to your ED.
Sildenafil and tadalafil work in a similar way, but there are practical differences between them. Some work for longer than others, and things like timing, food, your health and other medicines you take can affect which option is more suitable. For example, you may prefer a treatment taken when you need it, while a longer-lasting option may give you more flexibility around when you have sex. You don’t need to choose based on guesswork. We’ll consider your health, medicines and what matters to you when assessing which treatment may be appropriate.
If erection problems keep happening, it’s worth speaking to your GP even if you’re considering treatment online. ED can sometimes be an early sign of another health issue, including problems affecting your heart and blood vessels, diabetes or high blood pressure. It’s particularly important to seek medical advice if your ED is new or unexplained, you have other symptoms, or you’re concerned something else may be affecting your health. Getting checked doesn’t mean something serious is necessarily wrong. It simply gives you the opportunity to look at the bigger picture rather than treating the erection problem alone.

Questions, answered.
How do erectile dysfunction tablets work?
ED tablets such as sildenafil and tadalafil increase blood flow to the penis when you’re sexually aroused, helping you get and keep an erection. They don’t increase your sex drive or cause an erection automatically as sexual stimulation is still needed.
How quickly do sildenafil and tadalafil work?
Sildenafil is usually taken around one hour before sex, while tadalafil can be taken at least 30 minutes beforehand. Sildenafil can work for around 4 hours, while tadalafil can work for up to 36 hours. This is the window in which the medicine can help, it doesn’t mean you’ll have an erection for that entire time.
Will I be prescribed ED treatment after completing the assessment?
Not necessarily. Completing an assessment doesn’t guarantee a prescription. Your prescriber will review your symptoms, health and current medicines to decide whether treatment is safe and suitable for you. If we need more information, we’ll get in touch.
Can I take ED tablets with food or alcohol?
Tadalafil can be taken with or without food. Sildenafil can also be taken with food, although a meal may make it take longer to work. Drinking a lot of alcohol can make erections more difficult and may increase some side effects, so it’s best to avoid excessive drinking.
Can I take sildenafil or tadalafil with my other medicines?
Some medicines can interact with ED tablets, so tell us everything you take during your assessment. In particular, sildenafil and tadalafil must not be taken with nitrate medicines used for conditions such as angina, as this can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure.
What side effects can ED tablets cause?
Common side effects include headache, flushing, indigestion and a blocked or stuffy nose. Side effects can vary depending on which medicine you take. Your patient information leaflet contains the full list. Seek urgent medical help for serious symptoms such as chest pain, sudden loss of vision or a prolonged or painful erection.
What if my ED treatment doesn’t work?
Don’t worry if treatment doesn’t work as expected the first time. Timing, food, alcohol and sexual stimulation can all make a difference. If you’re still having difficulty, contact PillSuite so we can review your treatment. Don’t increase your dose or combine ED medicines yourself.
Will my ED treatment be private and discreet?
Yes. Your assessment and treatment are handled confidentially, and your order is sent in plain, discreet packaging. We aim to make accessing ED treatment straightforward and private.
